A female wolf has been struck and killed on Highway 93N, prompting officials to remind motorists to use caution on the roadways through the national parks.

On July 9, resource conservation staff responded to a report of a dead wolf about 10 kilometers south of Weeping Wall on the Icefields Parkway.

“An adult female was struck by a vehicle,” said Tania Peters, spokeswoman for Lake Louise, Yoho and Kootenay national parks.

She said they weren’t able to determine exactly when the female wolf was killed due to the warm weather, but they could tell she was in good health before being hit.

“It’s always challenging when you lose an animal at reproductive age,” said Peters.

There have been 16 recorded wolf mortalities in Banff National Park from 2005 to 2014. Another two were struck in Kootenay National Park and one in Yoho National Park last year.

Peters reminded drivers to watch for wildlife when they are driving in the national parks.

“No one was injured in this incident,” she said, noting it can still be traumatic for both the motorist and the animal. “We need to ensure (motorists) are obeying all posted signs.”

Three black bears have also been hit and killed by vehicles so far this year — including one on June 30, also on the Icefields Parkway, which does not have wildlife exclusion fencing.

The speed limit in the national parks is 90 km/hr.
